APA 7th Edition Referencing Guide1

A Wintec Library guide to referencing in APA 7th edition style
The guidelines for referencing images in this section are special adaptations of the full requirements of the Publication Manual (7th ed.) for use by undergraduate students. Postgraduate students and anyone intending to publish their work should reference images to publication standard with proper copyright attribution. See the APA for postgrads page or contact your Liaison Librarian for more details.

General guidelines for referencing images

When reproducing images from a website or book in an assignment, treat the image like any other form of information gathered from a secondary source and provide a full reference list entry. In the body of your work, each image should be accompanied by:

  • A figure number in bold (e.g., Figure 1).
  • The image title or a brief description of the image (in Italic Title Case)
  • A caption below the image (essentially an in-text citation) with details of author, date, and page number (for images from print sources).
  • A full reference list entry

Reference list entry
WellingtonNZ. (n.d.). Sunset over Wellington [Photograph].

For presentations, like PowerPoint, you do not need to include a figure number and title above the image.
