Nursing / Pae Nēhi: Reference managers

A reference manager is a piece of software that can help you organise your academic resources. It can also automatically generate in-text citations and reference lists! While most have the same basic features, they may operate quite differently. Reference managers can save you a lot of time and pain - but they also require set up and do not replace learning APA 7. ALWAYS check your in-text citations and reference lists before submitting.

 

Zotero

Zotero is a free, open source reference manager. It allows you to:

  • Save and organise resources in your own 'library'
  • Automatically generate in-text citations
  • Automatically generate reference lists
  • Use APA 7

To Set Up Zotero

To Set Up Zotero:
  1. Go to Zotero.org and create an account (We recommend using your Wintec email but adding your personal email as backup so that you don't lose access after leaving Wintec)
  2. Download the app to your computer
  3. Download the browser connector (Zotero connector)

 

 

You need all three for Zotero to work

Once everything is downloaded, Zotero will sit within Word on your desktop. If it doesn't appear, close Word and reopen it.

EndNote

EndNote is paid reference software. Wintec students and staff can download it for free. It allows you to:

  • Save and organise resources in your own 'library'
  • Automatically generate in-text citations
  • Automatically generate reference lists
  • Use APA 7

To Set Up EndNote

To Set Up EndNote:
  1. Request a license and installation instructions from ITS by emailing its@wintec.ac.nz (Use the subject line 'EndNote license request')
  2. Create an account with EndNote web
  3. Download app to desktop
  4. Install Word citation tool
  5. Download EndNote Click and create web extension account

Mendeley

Mendeley is a free reference manager. It allows you to:
