In-text citations

Because the image caption contains the information an in-text citation would normally, simply refer to the relevant Figure in the body of your assignment. E.g.:

Figure 7 provides an illuminating picture of the correlation of different occupational groups and their smoking habits.
or

Smoking can be linked broadly to different occupational groups (see Figure 7).

Adaptation of APA rule: The rules presented here for using tables/figures have been slightly modified from APA (6th).  APA has strict rules about crediting images, figures, or tables that have been reproduced or copied. However, unless your assignment is going to be professionally published, this level of detail is unnecessary.
