Research Skills for Health: Using Scholarly articles

What are scholarly articles and where to find them

Scholarly articles are generally articles written by experts for the purposes of academic information and conversation.  They usually take the form of research reports, that is, reports that demonstrate the primary research the authors have done.

Peer-reviewed articles are articles that have been reviewed (and approved) by other experts in the field for their research quality and rigour in order to complete the publishing process.

One way to know if a journal article is based on primary research is to look at the layout.

  • Background
  • Method
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Conclusion

The abstract will usually give you the overview of the research conducted.

Articles can be found in specific journals, databases, and other repositories.
