E-Tangata is an independent Māori and Pacific media platform.

This is a tale of two rangatira or ‘chiefs’, Wiremu Tamihana and Rewi Maniapoto, of Ngāti Hauā and Ngāti Maniapoto respectively. And if a trend that runs deep in New Zealand historiography is in any way accepted as legitimate, it is also a tale of good versus evil, moderation versus extremism, peace advocate versus warmonger. Except that it is none of these things.
Journal Article: Choosing Peace or War by Vincent O'Malley
The article focuses on the British invasion of the territory controlled by Kīngitanga supporters led by Lieutenant General Duncan Cameron and Governor George Grey, and the start of the Waikato War on July 12, 1863. The events that led to the invasion include the return of Cameron and his talk with Grey on June 20 regarding the invasion, the finalization of the plans for war on June 24 and the July 4-11 letters from Grey defending the war. The impact of war on Māoris is discussed.

The National library of New Zealand has a range of resources that relate to the kingitanga movement. Some can be interloaned but some are so valuable, you will need to make a trip to Wellington to see them.

Contains statements of submission of land etc to the mana of King Tawhiao by various hapu, with lists of names of hapu members (including some signatures), with boundaries of land.

The Kīngitanga or Māori King movement is one of the most enduring Māori institutions that emerged in colonial times, and one of the longest-running political institutions in New Zealand. Originating in 1858, it continued into the 2000s. Kīngi Tūheitia is the seventh successive sovereign since the inception of the Kīngitanga.

Tūrangawaewae is an iconic marae located at the heart of the Kīngitanga. Established by Te Pūea Hērangi and other whānau, this marae has come to represent the struggles, successes and history of the Kīngitanga movement. Tūrangawaewae is therefore the embodiment of the Kīngitanga and the people of Waikato.

How Governor George Grey Failed to bring peace,1861-1863
Sir George Grey in 1861 was appointed Governor of New Zealand, based on his reputation for effectiveness during his first governorship. Before the 1960s, Grey was praised by some historians, but since then his decisions and motives in ordering the invasion of the Waikato have been critically analysed and condemned.
