APA 7th Edition Referencing Guide1

A Wintec Library guide to referencing in APA 7th edition style

Who checks your reference list?

You have a dedicated Liaison Librarian for your school or your area of study. You can request your Liaison Librarian via email to check your references in your assignment. See here for a list of Liaison Librarians and their contact details.

Submitting your reference list

Before you send your assignment through for checking there's a few things you need to do:

  • use the APA guide to check your references
  • proofread your references (both your in-text citations and reference list entries)
  • check each in-text citation matches a reference list entry
  • add the due date of your assignment and your student ID number

You are welcome to point out any in-text citations or reference list entries that you are particularly concerned about.

If you are new to referencing, let us know.

Note
Send in your assignment as soon as you can. Do not wait until the day it is due, as we cannot guarantee we will be able to check it in time.
Expect your reference list to be returned within 48 hours of you emailing your Liaison Librarian, excepting weekends and public holidays.

What you can expect from your Liaison Librarian

Your Liaison Librarian won't correct every mistake you've made. They are not a proofreader for your references (that's your job), but they will identify aspects of your referencing that needs improving. They will also not check your references multiple times. However, if you follow the above guidelines, you won't need more than one or two checks for each reference list.

In general, an APA reference check will:

  • look closely at one reference for every type of source (a website, for example) and tell you what you need to change. It will then be up to you to check all your other references for that type of source
  • look closely at every type of in-text citation (a narrative or parenthetical, for example) and tell you what you need to change. It will then be up to you to check all your other in-text citations for that type
  • not write out a correct reference for you, but will direct you to the right place in the APA guide so that you can make your own corrections
