If you’re a postgraduate student or a researcher intending to publish your work, there are a few extra things you need to consider when doing APA referencing—especially if you’re writing a thesis or dissertation.
You are expected to reference and present your work to publication standard. While you can and should absolutely use the APA LibGuide to help with your referencing, there are a few subtle variations you need to be aware of to ensure your work is up to standard.

The Publication Manual
It is important to remember that the Publication Manual is not just a referencing guide. As its title suggests, the Publication Manual is a manual for presenting your work to publication standard. It is a detailed set of guidelines about writing and style, grammar, punctuation, the use of bias-free language, and formatting your work (appropriate fonts, margins, line-spacing, etc.). You should should adhere to these guidelines closely.
We recommend that you get a copy of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.) from the library and familiarise yourself with the relevant sections to make sure your work meets the required standard.
