A Wintec Library guide to referencing in APA 7th edition style

Quick links

Referencing a PDF file

PDFs are referenced the same as websites.

Author Surname, A. or Corporate/Group Author. (Date). Title of PDF in italic sentence case. Title of webpage/PDF Publisher. URL

Bates, M. (2012). North America’s nearly-forgotten native vegetable. University of Missouri. http://extension.missouri.edu/platte/documents/horticulture/fruit_veg/JerusalemArtichoke.pdf

Queensland Department of Health. (n.d.). What is...gestational diabetes mellitus? https://www.health.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0021/621615/sdcn-whatisbrochure.pdf

Note
If the PDF is only available once it has been downloaded to your computer, reference it the same as above. To provide a working URL (a URL that links to the relevant webpage and not your C drive), right click on the download link and choose the copying the link option. If this doesn't provide a working URL, use the URL of the page the resource was downloaded from.

Example

Page/paragraph numbers are optional for paraphrased information.

Note
URLs must be written exactly as they are displayed in your Internet browser (https://...). If Word autoformats the URL to the main words of the webpage title, you must change it. See here for how to do this.

Referencing a data set

A data set is a table, database or excel spreadsheet containing the results of an investigation, usually in number form with rows and columns.

As above, when referencing a data set downloaded from a webpage, include the URL of the webpage and indicate [Data set] in square brackets after the title. Include the title of the webpage/publisher of the dataset if different from the main author.

Author Surname, A. or Corporate Author. (Date). Title of data set in italic sentence case [Data set]. URL

StatsNZ. (2013). 2013 Census population and dwelling tables [Data set]. https://www.stats.govt.nz/information-releases/2013-census-population-and-dwelling-tables

Note
URLs must be written exactly as they are displayed in your Internet browser (https://...). If Word autoformats the URL to the main words of the webpage title, you must change it. See here for how to do this.
