Understanding your assignment question

It is important that you fully understand your assignment question so you know what the assignment requires you to do. 

When you receive your assignment or research topic you should carefully analyse the question. Pay attention to the instruction words. These are the words that indicate what sort of assignment you need to produce.

Some common instruction words include:

  • Explain
  • Analyse
  • Discuss
  • Compare
  • Summarise
  • Give examples of...
